Elephant Cupcakes

I had a lot of fun making cupcakes for a special 3 year old girl’s birthday party.  The party’s theme was “Zoo Animals” and all of the children were going to be wearing animal costumes.  The birthday girl’s costume was an elephant.  Her parents ordered 2 ½ dozen cupcakes for the party and left the decorating up to me.  I decided to make individual elephant head cupcakes.  The pictures I took do not do them justice – they looked better in person.  But I just had to share them with my blog fans because they were pretty cute.

Vanilla Frosting

1.5 # unsalted butter, softened

2# powdered sugar

1 tsp. salt

1 tbsp vanilla

2 oz water (approximately ¼ cup)

1 tsp lemon juice

I used Wilton Brand Icing Color Black to make the frosting elephant grey.  Using a toothpick, add small amounts to the frosting until it reaches the desired color.

Here are step by step instructions on how I made the cupcakes transform into elephants

Start with a blank cupcake, frosting, pastry bags and pastry tips #804 & #124

Using tip #804, starting on the outside edge pipe frosting in circular motion moving toward the center

Beginning in the center, using even pressure, squeeze bag and move your hand slightly up and down and pulling toward your self and down, swirling up to the right when you reach the edge of the cupcake, creating the trunk

Use chocolate chip for eyes. I used bitterweet chocolate chips that were flat. If you use the chips that come to a point, place the point side down into the frosting.

Using the #124 tip, start at the top of the head where you think the ear starts and pipe sideways using a ruffling motion. This is a bit tricky, you just have to practice it until you get a feel for it.

OH MY GOD, and with so much frosting, I would have been in elephant heaven (not to be confused with hog heaven, which would only be appropriate for a farm-themed birthday party!).

    Those look great!

Glad you enjoyed my blog, Jerilyn! Those elephant cupcakes were quite fun to make. I’m planning on many more animals in the future. Currently working on Orange Apricot Beer Bread. Have a wonderful day. Best wishes!

    Hi,
These little cupcake elephants are too cute to eat. You’ve animated them in a way that makes them endearing and they almost come alive. As a vegetarian I avoid eating anything with a head or a tail, so your little cupcakes would be safe with me. Ha!
Your Blog is yummy and I’ll return.

Thanks, Nicole! As a life long vegetarian myself, I agree with you about not eating anything with a head or tail. I have to draw the line at frosting heads and tails, however. Thanks you for visiting my site and taking the time to leave a nice comment. Have a great day!

I was reading the vegetable stock post on your blog, and saw a link to your elephant cupcakes. I absolutely adore elephants in general (such smart, sweet and sensitive creatures!), and I would say that I enjoy a good cupcake.

My birthday comes up early in the New Year, in January, and I may attempt to make these elephant cupcakes. I am not experienced with frosting and pastry bags… so I may have some warped elephants! Thank you!

Patricia…beautiful cupcakes…original at least to my eyes.

I have a question…I’m a little confused on the measurements for the butter and powdered sugar. There are # signs after the quantity. What am I not understanding?

    Looking forward to your response,
    Claudia

      Hello Claudia!

You are correct in that these are truly original. Something I allowed my hands to create, without outside direction or inspiration. I look to within for all of my ideas.

The # is a pound sign. So, 1.5# = one and a half pounds. Sorry for the confusion. I’m so used to reading professional directions from work recipes. I should have thought about that when writing recipes to share with the world.

I hope all is well with you. Take care.

Thanks for a darling idea! I just made up a batch for a bake sale tomorrow that will benefit my kids’ theater group. They are getting ready to perform “Seussical the Musical,” so the elephant theme is perfect.

Love the elephants and would like to try and make them for my daughters 3rd birthday. I cannot find the pastry tips you used. Any suggestions? Thank you for your help.

Hello Sharon! You could order the tips from the Wilton web sight, I suppose. Michael’s Craft Store sells a variety of tips. Oh, if you have a restaurant supply in your area, that may be another good source for pastry tips. have fun making the cupcakes!

Love these cupcakes and my daughter has loved elephants for 4 years so it is the theme for her party this year. I looked on the Wilton page and tip 804 is not available. Any other tip I might be able to substitute?

      Hello Aimee,

Any large round tip will work. Have fun. Hope you daughter appreciates all that you do for her.

THank you for the super fast reply! She is a very appreciative child (luckily) and is squealing with excitement that she will be having Fred (her elephant’s name) cupcakes for her Grandma and Papa party. Next I have to figure out how to make an elephant cake for her friend party! Thanks again.
